Dick was born January 24th , 1928, the youngest of four sons, to Bert L. and Louise (Pederson) Johnson on the family farm in Lincoln Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. He was baptized March 1928 and confirmed March 1943 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Butternut. Dick grew up in Madelia and was a graduate of Madelia High School where he played quarterback on the undefeated football team in his Junior year. Following high school, he served in the United States Navy from 1950-1954 on board the heavy cruiser, the USS Los Angeles during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Madelia and married Ardis Mae Bluhm on September 27, 1958. The couple was blessed with 2 children, Katherine “Kasey” and Steven. Along with a lifetime of farming, Dick was a jack of all trades when it came to building, welding, gardening, and helping his children with their varied projects. He enjoyed a week vacation at Kasey and Lee’s Ontario cabin each summer and spent frequent time working with Steve and the horses. Dad left his fingerprints in many places for us to remember all the time we spent working together.
Dick served the Madelia area in many ways. He was a member of the Madelia Hospital Board, South Central Electric Board for 27 years, Hanska Co-op Oil Board, CTV Board, as well as serving on the Butternut and Trinity Lutheran Church Boards. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, trapping, hunting with his brother Luther, playing volleyball, bowling and traveling.
