Helen Anna Valentien was born on December 22, 1918 to Willm and Minnie (Schmidt) Willms in Butterfield, MN. She attended school in Jackson and Cottonwood counties. On September 11, 1940, Helen was united in marriage to Dick Valentien at Estherville, IA. Following marriage, the couple farmed in the Comfrey area until Dick’s death when Helen moved to Springfield in 1979. Helen and Dick were parents of a son Lyle and daughter Diane. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she was involved in the Leah Circle and the quilting group. Helen enjoyed quilting, music, fishing, gardening, riding horses, and playing accordion.
Helen died on Monday, April 30, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Home, in Springfield, MN.
She is survived by her daughter Diane (Raymond) Potter of Jeffers; daughter-in-law Jeanne; grandchildren - Cindy (Gene) Bridges, Terry (Gwen) Valentien, Kelly (Kevin) Vogel, Laurie (Mike) Lietz, Amy (Mike) Mastin, Robert (Liz) Potter, and Brian (Anita) Potter; 13 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren; and sister Dorothy Quiring of Wadena. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dick; son Lyle; grandson Lyle Valentien, Jr.; brothers - Louis, George, and John Willms; and sisters - Emma Sabolik, Ella Sayre, Irene Wenisch, and Lena Marie in infancy.
