Donald Rice age 83, of Madelia, Minnesota died on September 15, 2022, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Trinity Lutheran Church-Madelia. Service will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church-Madelia, on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at 11:00 am. The clergy will be Rev. Janet Adams. Interment will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, in Madelia, Minnesota. Military Honors by Madelia Area Veterans Honor Guard. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Madelia, Minnesota. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com. Donald (“Butch” to family and friends) was born in Madelia to Donald and Elenor (Munter) Rice on September 5, 1939. He grew up on the family farm, was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian Church. He attended Madelia Public Schools and graduated in 1957. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for 4 years. He then returned to Madelia to join his father in the farming business raising crops and black angus cattle. On October 19, 1963 Donald married Gloria Ellingsberg. Together they raised 4 children; 1 son and 3 daughters. Stepping back from crop farming, he began working at Katolight and later at Luther Memorial Home until he retired. Butch enjoyed flying, Civil Air Patrol, New Ulm Radio Club (Ham Radios), being a SkyWarn Spotter, and was very skilled at repairing farm equipment and engines. He is survived by wife of 58 years, Gloria; son David (Kim) of Madelia; daughters Amy Rice of St. James, Amanda Mausser of Madelia, Angela Rice (Rob Prokopiuk) of Minneapolis; 1 grandson; 6 granddaughters; 11 great grandchildren; his sister Shirley Lambert of St. Paul; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and Brother-in-Law Gary Lambert.
