Obituary of Verlyce Borlaug
Verlyce Yvonne Borlaug was born October 4, 1926 to Walter and Emma (Anderson) Swenson on the family farm in Dawson, MN. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Riverside Lutheran Church of Dawson which would later become Grace Lutheran Church. As a child she grew up on the farm and graduated from Dawson High School in June 1944. From there she attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN where she graduated with a Math and Physical Education teaching degree. Verlyce taught in the following school districts: Renville, MN; Watford City, ND; Kimball, MN; and 25 years with the St. Paul School System. It was in Renville, that Verlyce would meet the love of life Leonard Borlaug, who having returned from military service, and completing under graduate degree at Luther College, was resuming his teaching career. A love affair lasting 57 years, 55 years married ensued with the exchanging of vows on June 17, 1950. Together this union was blessed with three children, John, Solvejg and Kurt and seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Ruth, Matthew, Bonnie, Aaron, Amy and Erik. She was also blessed with many friends and students who enriched her life more than they will ever know. Quilting, hardanger, knitting, sewing, computer work, and gardening were the pastimes that gave her joy. Prior to a major injury she enjoyed golf, swimming, and tennis. But her first love was always her family and keeping up with all their activities. Throughout her life, Verlyce treasured her faith in Jesus Christ. She was an active member of a local congregation in every community where she lived. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir (often under the direction of her husband), a member of the women organizations, and made countless quilts for Lutheran World Relief. In the community, Verlyce served as the publicity chair person for Lutheran Brotherhood for ten years. She was a member of the America Legion Auxiliary, and served as chair of the curriculum steering committee for the St Paul school system. Verlyce fought the battle of her life when she was diagnosed with leukemia in 1997. On February 21, 2005 the battle ended, and she met her Heavenly Father who bestowed the reward of eternal life. The faith that strengthened her throughout her life, is now what strengthens those who are left behind to mourn and remember. Verlyce is survived by: her husband, Leonard of Springfield, MN, sons John (Julie) Borlaug, St. Paul, MN and Kurt (Beth) Borlaug of Forest Lake, MN, and daughter Solvejg (Rev. Carl) Seamon of Springfield; brother DuWayne (Victoria) Swenson of Dawson, MN and sisters Phyllis Jean Fredlund, Granite Falls, MN and Gwendolyn Robertson, of Dawson, MN. brother-in-law Paul (Billie) Borlaug of Fairfax, VA; sister-in-laws Connie (Herbert) Cleveland of Rapid City, SD, Judy Borlaug of Washburn, ND, Shirley Borlaug of Viroqua, WI, and many nieces and nephews.
