Obituary of LaVerne Haler
LaVerne Hubert Haler was born on September 18, 1926 in St. James, MN, the son of Hubert & Louise (Berg) Haler. He grew up in St. James where he attended parochial school. LaVerne farmed with his father and grandfather for a few years before beginning farming on his own. He married Shirley Hovdet in St. James on November 27, 1954. The couple moved to Grogen for a year and then returned and farmed near St. James until LaVerne retired in 1990. LaVerne was a part time peace officer for the Watonwan County Sheriff's office from 1976 until retiring in 2001. He was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and the Eagles Club. LaVerne enjoyed hunting in his younger years, playing pool and tinkering and building things on the farm. Survivors include his wife Shirley Haler of St. James, sons, Brian Haler, Gary Haler and Blair & wife Kathy Haler, all of St. James, six grandchildren, Jeremiah, Kira & Micah Haler, Stef & husband Jon Rath, Trisha & Lindsey Haler, and brother, Wilfred "Mike" & Elsie Haler of Grogen. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Bernice Harbitz and Helen Haler.
