Obituary of Elvin Sulheim

Elvin Albert Sulheim, the son of Steiner and Mathea (Syverson) Sulheim was born on October 10, 1917, in Odin Township, Watonwan County, MN. He received his education at District #24 Country School, and he graduated from the Butterfield High School. Elvin was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Odin, MN, and this is where he remained a lifelong member. Elvin served his country in the Army Air Corp from June 1942 to January 1946. As an Airplane Crew Chief he served in Guam, Hawaiiand California, and he attained the rank of Sergeant. Following his honorable discharge he returned to the family farm and farmed with his brothers John and Torger. In 1957 John left the farm and in 1990 Torger passed away, leaving Elvin to carry on the family tradition on the century farm. He was a member of the Odin Township board for 24 years and a charter member of the Butterfield Thresherman's Association. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, playing cards, and he was a mechanical genius who enjoyed building and repairing anything. Elvin died on Wednesday evening, July 20, 2005, at the Windom Area Hospital in Windom, MN. Elvin is survived by a brother-in-law, Dr. John Alm of Camas, WA; five nieces and four nephews; many grandnieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Torger Sulheim and John and his wife Ruth Sulheim; and three sisters, Anna and her husband Sidney Mathistad, Margaret and her husband Harley Doerr, and Marie Alm.
