Jeanette Evelyn Sharpsteen, daughter of Frank and Nora (Pederson) Sharpsteen was born at home in St. James on February 22, 1917. Jeanette was a lifelong resident of St. James and member of the United Methodist Church. Her dad worked for the railroad: as a child this meant free rides. She graduated from St. James School. Jeanette married Clayton Johnson in St. James on January 8, 1939. They made their home on the farm where they raised their six children. She worked as a secretary for the Farm Program of Minnesota until she became a mother. Later in life she worked as a secretary then case aid for Watonwan County Human Services. She was active in Extension Club, 4-H, Church, coffee club, she was also a skilled and competitive card player. Her beautiful quilts, some king size, are scattered among family and friends. She lived alone in her home since her husband died in 1992 and moved into the Good Samaritan Home long after her 100th birthday. She remained independent and feisty to the end. She told her doctors how to treat her illnesses and caregivers what she needed. She was mother and grandmother to all and supported us in all things. She will be missed.
