Vangie Hanson, age 89, of St. James, died on Sunday, October 17, 2021, at Good Samaritan Society-Pleasant View in St. James.
Funeral services will be 2pm, Friday, October 22, 2021, at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James with Rev. Jim Renz officiating.
Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour before the service on Friday.
Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James.
Evangeline Mavis ‘Vangie’ Schlaak was born on May 2, 1932 on her grandparents farm in Adrian Township, near Comfrey to parents Herbert and Linda (Juhnke) Schlaak. She attended country school #36 through the 8th grade and graduated from the St. James High School. She worked for the Watonwan County Superintendent of Schools until 1954. On October 2, 1954, she was united in marriage to Donald Hanson at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church in St. James. They made their home on the family farm NW of St. James. They moved in St. James in 1997. Vangie enjoyed volunteering at Treasure Haus, collecting angels, owls and birds. She was active with the Church, she held Council office, participated in evening guild, was a youth counselor, and sang in the church choir.
Vangie is survived by her sister Carlene Johnson of St. James, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and 2 sisters Pernilla Pate and Sylvia Schlaak, 2 brothers-in-law Cyril Pate and Gary Johnson.
