Elaine was born on June 2, 1933, in Mankato, Minnesota to Martin and Meta (Hohenstein) Schwarz. She was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Willow Creek on July 2, 1933 and was confirmed at St. Peters in Vernon Center on April 14, 1946. Elaine graduated from high school just prior to her 16th birthday and started college at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter in September where she prepared to enter the nursing program. After her second year of college, she was offered a nursing assistant position with Dr. Morgan in Amboy. While working there, she met the handsome young man who would become her husband of 68 years. Elaine and Carl Grannis were united in marriage on September 27th, 1953 at St. Peters Lutheran church in Vernon Center. Over the next few years, the couple welcomed daughter, Laurie and son, James (Jim) into their family. Elaine left her nursing job to care for her family. After the family moved to Lewisville, MN, Elaine became an active member of Zion Lutheran Church- teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, handbell choir, forming and directing a children’s choir, member of Ladies Aid, and numerous other organizations. She began working at Merchants State Bank in the 60’s where she eventually retired. Elaine loved music, family, friends, flowers, cooking, baking, museums and architecture.
