I remember using a hay hook to help Dick put bales of hay into the hayloft in the old barn. Yes, he had us slop the hogs too. He rigged up a plank under the old Alice Chalmer carriage so we could drive though the soybeans sitting on the plank picking cockleburs.
He had a dog in the early '60's that he called ,"Dog Hammerschold" which I thought was so funny as a kid because at that time Dag Hammerschold was Secretary General of the United Nations.
But what was the most fun was when he made two go-carts out old lawnmower parts so we could drive around the farm in our "Jeeps" wearing the WWI helmets that Grandpa Harry had brought back from that war.
I guess gas was cheap back then because we filled up those go-carts any time we wanted from the farm tank.
He would go to South Dakota back then with Larry Hoffensberger and pick up a panoply of fireworks that would put on the best Fourth of July show anywhere.
He was phlegmatic, dry, witty, versatile, and intelligent. May he rest in the Peace of Christ.
